Is it possible to monitor traffic on a site without having any way to edit it? From the outside. Like the amount of traffic you are receiving on an affiliate link.

Great list, Google Analytics is pretty much a must have for any website owner. I also second April's suggestion of Feedburner if you have a blog.

This is a very good article for listing the types of monitoring software out there. I personally enjoy Google Analytics. They have added some very handy tools such as "site analysis" which lets you view how someone uses your site.

really cool stuff, i love one of the tracking tools used over at www.shoutingzone.com because it lets you know where they go after they have been to your site too :D

They have this tool listed on their forum that reads a users css cookie or something to see if they have been to a number of other forums, list of sites can be manually played around with and as large as 2-5k sites to cross check. Think thats what the marketing industry needs to find out who their competitors are and such!

Again, great post :)

I'm mainly using Google Analytics but also Microsoft Adcenter Analytics (Gatineau). I've used Mint before, but with >1000 unique visitors per day it collects way too much information on your server. It's good for smaller websites, but not for bigger ones (it uses a database request for each page visit). Crazyegg is nice too but it delayed the page loading time so I removed it after a few days.

Nice list, another one I recently tried out is crazy egg.

http://crazyegg.com/

This does overlays on your site with details on where users clicked and how many times. It also has heat map overlays and one called confetti which shows more details about the users. Very cool, and you can set it up on a few pages for free with up to 5000 visitors.

Thanks for the list, never heard of awstats i guess i will have a look. Anyhow i'm looking for Google Analytics free alternatives and lately impressed with Woopra and Piwik.

Woopra has a desktop app option and it has a very cool interface, however, i'm still experimenting with piwik as it is a self hosted analytics solution and they have site traffic gadget in real time, in case you want to show it off.

I personally use google analytics and mint. I love having the extra data regarding visitor location, etc that google provides, but I also like the in real time data mint provides as well.

One thing this article doesn't mention is blogs and rss feeds. If you have an rss feed I strongly recommend setting up Feedburner for it so you can track your subscribers, daily rss hits and clicks back to your blog.
