Great post!

I am a freelancer myself... and have branched off to other niches/departments for some time now.

I suggest others to do the same, starting with the 5 suggestions posted on this article.

Very insightful article. Doing a Graphic Communications degree we covered all aspects of design, but were encouraged to develop just one that we were most interested in. I work in web design but i am keen to learn any other aspects of suggested in the article. As the broader your knowledge the further you will go.

@ Helena,

Well I belong in the category of designers that are just ...designers. My background is Visual Communication Design and I have specialized in web design, but coding is something that doesn't interest me (at least not at the moment). I do like to develop my design skills and become really good at what I do best.

Having said that I would like to show you my website http://www.youandigraphics.com where you can see samples of my work. I dont know if you are still looking for a designer to work with, but I am interested in hearing from you if you are.

I loved this quote that I heard at a recent Apple design presentation.

"Totally into design. Totally into technology. Totally into everything that can be done today"

I also find it useful to use online networking sites such as facebook and linkedin to keep your contacts within reach. You don't have to be active with these services, but having an account and updating it once in a while can be invaluable. Thanks for the post!

Helena - Yes i think its of course possible to team up with others i did a lot of freelance work with a web designer in the past. My partner would code the sites and i would do the design. It can just be easier to work for yourself and not have to rely on other people.

Stick to what you are good at for now and just keep improving and branching off when you feel comfortable. Just be sure to keep your original skills sharp and keep improving.

Hi Gino,
Interesting post.
I have a different situation that I need some help with.
I am a self taught web developer - developer not designer in that I can take a graphic designers image & create a website or customise a blog - I am not a graphic designer by any stretch of the imagination - I can resize images, alter basic images for navigation or heading elements in Photoshop & that's about it. I can do pretty reasonable wordpress theme customisations that involve those basic skills in photoshop, but anything overly graphically creative is out of my league - although I do appreciate great design.

So are there graphic designers out there that don't want to multi-skill as you have suggested, like Gary mentions in his comment "I still believe each discipline has it’s own skill set, and that it’s still best to be strong and specialize in just one". Graphic designers that would be prepared to team up with someone like me to do the graphical component of a site, so I can do the coding and construction aspect of web development?

Cheers
Helena

Great article, however I think SEO and "Online Marketing" should fall under a web design category.
