Increase Your Google Visibility in Under 5 Minutes

Articles   February 1, 2010  by

Google now holds a 70% market share of the search engine game and increasing your visibility in Google Search is key to gaining new clients. In addition, you may have noticed that Google now displays 7 local listings and a map when you search for a local business or service. Guess what? Graphic design is a service and a business. You can immediately increase your visibility to potential clients in your area by registering yourself in Google’s Local Business Center.

Local SEO for Graphic Designers

It takes about 5 minutes to sign up and fill out your info. At the end, they need to verify your account by phone or postcard. I chose phone and received a call within 10 seconds of submitting my listing. Voila! I found myself in Google Maps a few minutes later.

In a busy city like Los Angeles it isn’t easy to be ranked in normal search results, but follow these tips to increase your visibility in both general search and google maps search.

  • Use words that describe your service like Logo Designer, Freelance Designer, etc. in your listing. I used SEO Consultant in the example above
  • Add your website address to your local listing; add your local address to your website (in html text, not flash, not image)
  • Guest post on blogs and link back to your site with words like “logo designer in los angeles” or “web designer in west la”
  • If you are a web designer who has worked with local businesses, ask them for a “web design by______” link in the footer.
  • Ask past clients to add reviews for you on Google Maps

Even if you don’t get ranked in general search results, you may find that clients will find  you by browsing the area closest to their business. For example, my listing didn’t show up until I moved the map near my address. Lucky for me, there are a ton of office buildings nearby.

    Hello,

I do agree that Google’s local listing is something that a local business and a small business need to tend to.

The local Business center is such a valuable resource. You don’t even need a website to have a web presence, with it. Although it does help for people to have a site that they can visit for more information.

Google local has completely removed Google maps for “website design”, “logo design” etc. The map no longer pops up. Just FYI

Has anyone seen examples of people listing their business multiple times? Does Google consider this black hat? Some small businesses are notorious for having 10 different listings for their business….
    Anyone know?

    Curtis

@Curtis – This is considered black hat and won’t last long. Google maps/local is now verifying physical street addresses through a number of databases. They will know if its a PO Box or mailbox center, so you need a real physical address. In addition, they are working improving their googlemaps algorithm so people can’t add a listing and show up right away.

What happens on a local listing when your office is off the town map and doesn’t show up, do you do a fake office? M.

it really is amazing how many people neglect Google’s local business center to help promote their business. It is a pretty quick process that can yield some amazing results in the right market.

The problem is some companies use their addresses 2 and 3 times over, e.g. Home address, fake business address, then a genuine one. This makes a farce of the listings and makes it even harder for other businesses to get up their on Google local business. This is especially the case if you are in an overcrowded marketplace like web design, seo etc.

Great reminder to get this sorted! I have a listing but we’ve moved – updated it in seconds and got the phone confirmation in seconds.
