The Harlem Edge: Cultivating Connections Winners and Exhibition

The Emerging New York Architects (ENYA) Committee of the American Institute of Architects – New York Chapter (AIA NYC) revealed the winners of its fifth biennial design ideas competition earlier this year called “The Harlem Edge – Cultivating Connections”. A total of 178 teams and individuals registered for the competition and more than 98 entries from 16 countries were submitted for judging. The winners are shown in the “The Harlem Edge: Cultivating Connections Exhibition” which commenced last July 12 and will end on October 31 at the Center for Architecture.

The 2012 competition by ENYA focuses on the redevelopment of the West 135th Street marine transfer station establishing a connection from the water to the surrounding community. This year’s theme is a follow up in previous ENYA contests featuring waterfront sites including Groen Hoek, Southpoint on Roosevelt Island, the South Street Seaport, and the High Bridge Crossing of the Harlem River.

The winners  which include 4 prize-winning projects, along with 5 honorable mentions and 14 additional juror selections, will be shown at the Center for Architecture and published in a competition catalog as a print companion. Moreover, schematic models and a video presentation about the whole competition, site, and community round out a “waterfront lounge” to be installed in the HLW Gallery.
