A very famous person once said that with great power comes with great responsibility. As designers, we are given the amazing gift of transforming ordinary objects and making them extraordinary through improving their visual appeal. This is the reason why the Office of the National Coordinator of Health Information Technology (ONC) in association with the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) are hosting a design contest for graphic designers to help improve the health care system in the United States.
Dubbed as the ONC-VA Health Design Challenge, the competition aims to redesign the current, plain-text, electronic medical record used by physicians and patients in the Department of Veterans Affairs system. Until November 30, designers will be given the chance to submit their design entries for their take on a re-imagined health record. There will be a panel of curators who will select the best designs to exhibit online and in a show in Washington D.C. to inspire members of the health care industry.
After the exhibit, the curators will pick a final design (which may combine elements of numerous designs) to be made and uploaded to the code sharing site Github as an open-source project. The VA supports this open-source development of the selected design as it enables the agency to improve their online patient portal – MyHealtheVet.
The criteria for judging entries include:
- The design should integrate the final design into VA’s products (Easier to read)
- Contribute to the open-source project (downloadable)
- Help provide patients with the most user-friendly experience when they are trying to check their medical records.
Submission of entries ends on November 30, 2012. There will be an estimated $50,000 worth or prizes to be given away for this competition, but what’s most important is that as designers, we will be able to change many lives by improving their health care system through better user experience.
