Tutorial submissions are the article submissions of the design industry. Every niche including graphic design has special ways you can market yourself online. One of the ways designers can gain exposure and new business online is via Photoshop tutorials. Not only can you submit your tutorials to get traffic, but some blogs and sites will even pay you to do Photoshop tutorials, which is a great way to make extra money.

If you are going to create tutorials I highly recommend publishing your tutorials on your own site first, unless you are specifically trying to sell them, which means you cant publish them first because the sites usually want the tutorials they buy to be exclusive and or published on their website first.

The sites below vary in what you can do with your Photoshop tutorials. Some are tutorial syndication sites, some are designs news sites, some are blogs and a few of the links are places that will pay for tutorials. Enjoy the mega list of Photoshop tutorial submission sites below!

Create great looking, 3-Dimensional, gooey looking text . This technique does require minimal drawing skills but is definitely suitable for beginners. Enjoy and stay tuned for more tutorials!

Gooey Photoshop Text Tutorial

Step 1 – Canvas

It’s important for this tutorial that you set up the same size canvas as the effects we’ll apply will vary depending on how many pixels it’s across. To use in smaller or bigger projects you will need to tweak the settings applied throughout this tutorial. Set up a 2500 X 1500 pixel, RGB document at 300dpi.

Step 2 – Texting

Select the Horizontal Type Tool, set the colour to a lightish grey and write your word. It’s best to use a fairly uncomplicated and bold font, I’ve gone for Avant Garde in Bold. Adjust the tracking to 50 as we’ll need space in between letters to allow for gooey growth. Press CTRL+T or go to Edit > Free Transform and resize your text by holding the SHIFT key (to maintain aspect ratio) and pulling one of the corner points with the mouse.

Step 3 – Ready the Tools

Select the Pen Tool and set it Shape Layers. Set the foreground colour to 40C, 10M, 100Y, 0K. Zoom into 100% and you are now ready to draw.

Step 4 – Drawing

Draw your first point at the start of the first letter. The best way to draw a curve is to position one anchor point at the origin of the curve and one at the end point or point at which the curve changes. To split an anchor point you hold the ALT key and click on the last drawn anchor point. This will delete the outward part of the handle and allow you to draw another one in (on the same anchor point) at any angle without altering the direction of the inward handle. This splitting technique allows for sharp angles following a curve.

Step 5 – Editing your points

Continue drawing loosely around the shape, adding some drips at the bottom to mimic gravity. Use the Direct Selection Tool (Behind the Path Selection Tool if you hold the mouse button) to manipulate the anchor points and the curve handles. In order to create an elongated bulbous end at the bottom of a drip you’ll need to pull the bottom facing handles out further. At any point if you’re not happy with the position or angle of your point, you can manipulate it with the Direct Selection Tool.

Step 6 – Best foot forward

I find it’s easier to draw the drips from top to bottom (following the gravitational pull) so once you hit the bottom of the letter, use the Direct Selection Tool to click anywhere on the canvas. Then select the first point (at the top of the letter) with the Pen Tool and draw in the rest. Something I forgot to mention earlier is to set the fill at 80% so you can see the letter underneath.

Step 7 – Subtracting

To get the hole in letters such as ‘O’ or ‘A’ you’ll need to set the Pen Tool to Subtract from shape area. Draw the outer shape of the ‘O’ and close off the path. Select the path thumbnail so that it highlights the path, set the Pen Tool to Subtract from shape area and draw in where the hole should be.

Step 8 – Finishing off

Complete the rest of the letters and set the Fill for each layer at 100%.

Step 9 – Inner Shadow

Select the ‘G’ layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Inner shadow and setup as in the screen grab.

Step 10 – Inner Glow

Working on the same layer, select the Inner Glow setting and setup as in the screen grab.

Step 11 – Bevel and Emboss

Do the same with the Bevel and Emboss…

Step 12 – Satin

…And finally Satin.

Step 13 – Copy and paste

Select the ‘G’ layer and go to Layer > Layer Style > Copy Layer Style. Select the remaining letter layers and go to Layer > Layer Style > Paste Layer Style.

Step 14 – Ol’ Drippy

Draw in more drips on top of the letters. Copy and paste the Layer Style as before and go to Layer > Layer Style > Scale Effects… scale them back to fit the size of the drip, in this case it’s 40%. Then go to Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow and scale the opacity back to 60%.

Step 15 – Rasterize and Mask

Create a new layer directly below the new drip you just drew. Select the drip and the blank layer and merge them (Layer > Merge Layers). Add a Layer Mask (Layer > Add Layer Mask > Reveal All) and use a soft-edged paintbrush loaded with black to mask off the top of the drip. Repeat this process until you’ve covered the word.

Step 16 – Depth

To add depth, draw some more drips beneath the letter layers. Copy, paste and scale the layer effects to save time.

Step 17 – Texture

It’s a good idea to add texture to the final text to make it feel more ‘real world’. You can either overlay an easily downloadable grunge texture or try the following method: Go to Filter > Noise and add a 2 pixel noise filter. Then go to Filter > Blur Gaussian Blur and apply a 0.6 pixel blur.

Twitter is quickly becoming a hot spot for people and business of all kinds, including designers. Many designers now have twitter accounts so they can network with other designers on twitter and promote their work to a new audience. What I found interesting is, because of twitter a whole new niche of design has been created and that is Twitter backgrounds.

Because of the text limitations of Twitter people have quickly adapted and started using their Twitter backgrounds as a creative billboard. If designed correctly your Twitter background can include all sorts of important information about your business such as an extended bio, logo, contact information and so on. Plus since you can change the background and other settings in your account you can keep your branding consistent.

Many designers are now offering twitter background design services and some designers are Specializing in it and doing great business. Check out some of these random cool twitter backgrounds below to see what people have been doing to make the most of their Twitter accounts! I was surprised at how many large accounts had default or ugly backgrounds, but I suspect more and more people will get custom backgrounds in the near future.

Ok, today we are going to look at how to make grunge / worn style type to use in your art. The process is actually quite simple, and you can get endless variations.

Adam Woodhouse www.adamwoodhouse.co.uk

Step 1 – Setting up our canvas

Ok, first step is pretty straight forward. All we are going to do is open Photoshop, and create a new canvas ( File > New ) and I am going to create a canvas 640px wide by 300px high.

We are going to add a background colour, so using the paint bucket tool (Shown below) we are going to simply click on the background layer with our selected colour. I am going to use a shade of dark red as my background colour:

Step 2 – Creating our type

We are now going to select the Horizontal Type Tool, which is the big “T” in the tools panel (Circled Below), we could also hit the “T” on our keyboard to select it. This will add an array of options at the top of the screen where you customize your font. I’m going to select the font “Coolvetica” ( which you can download free from here ) set at 172px and in the colour white.

Step 3 – Rasterising our type

Now we have our type set up, we are going to make it raster rather than vector (which it is currently in) – Raster means it can’t be scaled without pixelisation basically. We do this by going to the layers panel, right clicking on our type layer and clicking ” Rasterise Type” from the list.

Step 4 – Erasing the edges

Now we have our raster type on the canvas, we can start it edit its form directly. We need to select the “Eraser tool” from the tools menu – Eraser or press “E” on our keyboard. Then our tool menu will change at the top of the screen. We need to select the “Oil Pastel Large” brush.

We now need to just erase the edges of our type by clicking on our type layer and erasing around the type itself.

We can change the brush, and get a more varied effect, or even create your own brushes to erase with!

Step 5 – Adding effects

We can just as easily add grunge to the type now, instead of erasing it. So I’m going to select the “Brush Tool” from the tools tab (Or press B on the keyboard) and selecting a rough brush from the list. I’m going to use a variation of brushes from the predefined ones in Photoshop.

We could also look at rotating our type slightly to add a more random effect. We can do this by selecting the transform rotate tool from the menu ” Edit > Transform > Rotate” then rotating slightly to add that more random look, hit Enter on your keyboard to apply the transformation

Step 6 – Finalizing your type

Now we have our grunge type, its time to experiment! Now experimentation is the best way you can learn Photoshop, you can play with the tools and filters to really create some masterpieces or monsters! Don’t be afraid to experiment people

I’ve created loads of brushes for people looking to experiment to download for free, you can grab them here! After playing around with the brushes from my own collection this is what I managed to knock up in about 5 min’s!

I hope this helped, any questions be sure to email me or write a comment below!

Cheers,

Ok, in this tutorial I am going to help you create clouds with rain ( you can choose to add the rain ) in Photoshop. I am using Photoshop CS2 for this tutorial, but if you are using any other version I’m sure it’ll work just the same! This tutorial is pretty basic, yet highly effective!

Tutorial by Adam Woodhouse: www.adamwoodhouse.co.uk

Step 1 – New Document

Ok lets get started! First of all we need to create a new Photoshop document, so “File > New” from the menu bar, and I’m going to be using a canvas of 640 pixels wide by 300 pixels high. You can choose a different height but it’s probably easier to work out small first to you can get the detail right.

Step 1 – Making the selection

Ok, so now we have a new canvas set up, we are going to make the basic shape of our cloud. First of all we need to create a new layer, so from the top menu click ” Layer > New > Layer” and I am going to rename this layer ” Clouds “.

Next we are going to select the “Lasso Tool” from the toolbar, which looks like this : When you select the Lasso tool, you will notice that at the top of the screen, your options have changed specifically for this tool. We need to have a feathered selection instead of a hard one, I’m going to increase the Feather to 60px. This allows the clouds to spread out more without having such a hard edge.

Now we are going to simply create a cloud shaped selection using the Lasso tool on our canvas. Here is the shape I made :

Step 3 – Making the clouds

As you have created your new layer, and you have an active selection on the screen, hit “D” on your keyboard to reset the color palette to a black foreground color and a white background. This will ensure that we won’t have strange colored clouds, unless you want to of course! The from the menu, go to “Filter > Render > Clouds”, and you should end up with something like this :

Now we want to duplicate this layer, so from the menu, ” Layer > Duplicate Layer” and rename this layer ” Clouds Overlay”. We want to change the blending mode to ” Hard Light “, so if you navigate to the layers panel and click on the duplicated Clouds layer, there will be an option at the top of the panel selected on Normal. Click this and change to ” Hard Light”. You should end up with something like this :

Step 4 – Adding the gradient

As you can see, our cloud is looking at bit weird with the surrounding white. So we are going to quickly add a blue gradient to the background layer, so you need to click ” Background ” on the layers panel, then from the tools bar, then click the gradient button ( Labeled 1 below ). Ensure you have a decent foreground and background color palette ( Label 2 ) – I’ve used two blues for a sky type background. Then, click and drag your cursor to make a straight gradient, ( Labeled 3 ).

And you should end up with something similar to this :

Step 5 – Creating the rain

Ok this is really simple, all we are going to do is make a new brush. So we are going to make a new document ( File > New ) but don’t close the clouds file we have been working on. I suggest using the same size you did before for the clouds file.

We are going to select a soft round small brush from the brushes menu ( to get to the brushes palette, click the brush tool or hit “B” on the keyboard and from the tool menu click the arrow next to the selected brush, this is illustrated below ).

Let’s reset out color palette to black and white, so hit ” D” on your keyboard. And all we want to do now is create a new layer and click once in the center of our canvas to create a little black dot. ( Labeled 1 below ). Then we want to duplicate this layer ( Layer > Duplicate Layer ).

We now have two layers containing the dot, select the lower layer from the layers panel, then from the top menu click ‘ Filter > Blur > Motion Blur ‘ change the angle to 90 degrees and the distance will define how long your raindrop will be ( I’ve chosen 19 for this example – refer to label 2 below ).

We now want to select the Move Tool, ( The highest icon on the toolbar, or tap ‘V’ on your keyboard ), and just move our blurred rain above the rain dot, labeled in step 3.

Step 6 – Creating a dynamic brush for the rain

Now we have our single drop of rain, select it using the ‘Rectangular Marquee Tool” Hit ‘M’ on your keyboard, and just click down on the canvas and drag to select an area around your drop. We now need to make this into a brush, so click from the menu bar ” Edit > Define Brush Preset” A diag box will pop up, just hit ok.

Now select this newly created brush from the brushes palette ( Check back to step 5 if you can’t remember how ), and your new brush will be the last brush on the list.

When you have selected your brush, you need to open the brushes panel, so from the top menu, ” Window > Brushes “. When this is opened, I am going to change the parameters for the rain brush, i’m going to click ” Scattering ” option, and change the scattering to 1000%.

Step 7 – Adding the rain

We need to open back up the clouds file, and create a new layer ( Layer > New Layer ) and our rain brush is already selected, so change the foreground color to white in the tools panel. All we need to do now is paint on the rain below our clouds! If you like we can erase the top section of the rain using the erase tool ( Hit ‘E’ on the keyboard ) to create a smooth flow!

Here is my finished product!

Cheers!

Ok! This is a Cinema 4D Tutorial I’ve created which will introduce you to object manipulation, textures, fur and also general familiarity with the program itself. I’m using Cinema 4D 10 and you can download the demo directly from Maxon.

Tutorial by Adam Woodhouse: www.adamwoodhouse.co.uk

Cinema 4D Tutorial – How to Create 3D Grass

Step 1 – Creating a base

First of all open the Cinema 4D application, which will automatically create a new scene for you to start working with. You then need to create a base for your grass to be attached to, I’m going to add a cube and modify it – ” Objects > Primitive > Cube”.Your canvas should look exactly like this now :

Step 2 – Modifying out base

Now we have out cube, we can edit to to be more of a interesting shape by firstly clicking it, and in the Attributes pane, increasing Segments X, Y & Z to a higher number ( I am going to select 50 and this will enable me to edit the shape more smoothly )

I’m going to manually edit my cube, by selecting the orange square on the cube and dragging them to a desired position in the X, Y and Z plains. You can alternatively change the size of the image in the attributes panel by typing X, Y Z variables, but let’s keep this simple and quick.

Then I am going to hit the “C” key on my keyboard ( Make Editable from the menu ” Functions > Make Editable ” ) This allows me to then use the Magnet tool to manipulate my plain further. Select the magnet tool ( Structure > Magnet ) And click and drag the cursor on the plane to create any desired effect.

I used the tool to add a hilly effect to the plane:

Step 3 – Adding texture to the base

We now need to make out base look relatively organic, so we are going to add a soil type texture. In the materials pane, ( bottom of the screen ) click “File > New Material”, underneath where you just clicked a new texture will appear in the shape of a circle named “Mat” – Double click on the word “Mat” and rename it “Soil”.Double click on the Soil Sphere texture, and a new dialog box will pop up looking like this :

Click the arrow where the option for ” Texture” Appears on the right area of the dialog box. A list will display below, click on “Gradient”. You will notice the circle with the texture displayed in the dialog box will change. What we are going to do now is change the gradient itself, so double click where the flat gradient is displayed ( underneath the texture arrow ) and change the values in the shader properties to something like this:

We want to now click the close button on this panel, and apply the texture to our plane. You need to click and drag the texture onto out plane, this is illustrated below :

Step 4 – Selecting the placement of the grass

Ok if you have got this far you are doing pretty well. We now need to click the window icon, which will allow us to see multiple views of our scene.

Clicking this will change our view to this:

Ok, we only now care about the top right view, click the Use polygon tool – so select “Tools > Polygons ” from the menu. Now we need to select the rectangle selection tool and select all polygons in the top right window labeled “Top”. (Basically this will be the area the grass will be placed on) – So select ” Selection – Rectangle selection” From the menu. Move the cursor to the top right view and in a click drag motion, select all the polygons until they all turn orange.

Now your view will look like this:

Now come out of this view by pressing the same window icon as you did before, however, click the one in the top left ( Perspective view ). You will now be able to see your object with only the top polygons selected.

Step 5 – Adding the grass

Now we have our top layer of the plane selected, we need to add grass, ok ok, so I lied to you, it’s not grass. It’s Cinema 4d’s Fur Tool, but does a sweet job or replicating grass. All you need to do now is click from the menu “Hair > Fur” and some spikes will appear on the plane in the perspective view.We are now going to increase the amount of fur, so in the objects panel, select “Fur” which will update the Attributes view. Where you can change the ” Count ” Aka, amount of fur. It’s initially at 10000, but I’m going to change mine to 30000, but you will have to experiment to ensure you will have the full area covered in grass depending on how large you made your plane. Also we will change the Randomness of the grass, by adding a variable randomize setting of 6 degrees.

This might sound like gibberish but experiment with the attributes, and who knows, you might create some really cool stuff.

Step 6 – Add texture to the grass

That’s basically it to be honest, but we will need to add a new texture to the grass to make it green. When you added the grass, a new texture was made in the textures panel. It should be called “Fur Mat” – double click it to open the texture dialogAll I am going to do here is change the gradient of the grass to two shades of green. You can change the thickness etc via the left hand menu if you want to experiment!

Step 7 – Rendering

That’s it! You have made some grass on a plane, if you got this far… congratulations! Now we need to just render the image to see the final result, so click “Render > Render View” From the menu which will show you exactly what you have created! I just added a background ( Objects > Scene > Background ) and changed the attributes to ” Use color > Always”. Here’s my final result!

Cheers,
