We’ve Started Using PunchTab!

Here’s another one of our attempts to reward you loyal readers for sticking with You The Designer all this time, and this one is a pretty big deal! PunchTab is a loyalty program that lets us reward you for engaging with the blog, whether you visit, browse, comment on, and vote up our posts and more – with points you can use to redeem a reward from us!

As some of you may have already seen by clicking on the Rewards ribbon tab hovering on the left side of our pages, we have a 30-day leaderboard tracking the most active readers on the blog.

Behance Launches Student Show, an Initiative to Support Emerging Designers

If you’re a student, here’s an exclusive design community where you can get your work exposure, get feedback from peers as well as world-renowned creative professionals, and even get hired!

Behance has launched a new student initiative called the Student Show Gallery, which aims to showcase the world’s next generation of creative talent. Membership is free! As a member, your work may be featured, “appreciated”, followed by fellow creatives, and noticed by recruiters. You’ll also receive updates on student competitions and exclusive discounts from some of the world’s top creative brands.

In fact, at the moment there’s a Student Showdown ongoing that you can participate in right now!

Entry to this competition is free, and the current submission round runs from January 11 to February 20, 2012. To participate, all entrants must be currently enrolled in school or graduated within the last 3 months. Check the competition details to see how the series works and what great prizes and perks you can get! New competitions are hosted periodically based on creative field or concept, so keep checking back with the Student Show Gallery for updates.

2011 Graphic Designer Survey: For the Brilliant Minds Behind the Graphics

When a young friend, a Photoshop genius, announced during supper that he wanted to pursue a career in graphic design, his old man almost choked on boneless chicken before downing a glass of strawberry milkshake, his mom patted his shoulder and recited the names of famous artists who killed themselves, and his little sister cried.

Apparently, some people don’t know much about graphic designers. Considering that our skills are being sought after by major corporations in every industry, it certainly is a head-scratcher. What’s even more surprising is that some graphic designers aren’t aware of current trends.

How much is the average designer earning? What programs or tools do they use? Is blogging necessary, or is uploading a portfolio enough? What exactly do designers do for a living? Oh, we bet there are tons of questions bothering graphic designers and the general public alike. So we’ve come up with the perfect solution.

A Tribute to Apple’s Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs is probably one of the best innovators of our time and the news of his death has saddened the world. He may be gone but he has left us such a great legacy. He has revolutionized personal computing into both an art and a science. He has discovered ways to make computing much easier and efficient. His imagination and perseverance have inspired countless lives and his designs have definitely created a bond between peoples.

Graphic designers are no exception to his influence. Many of us own a Mac or iPad, not just because our friends do, but because they are simple to use and dependable. As he once said, “Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.” True to his word, he has led Apple to create gadgets that are both good to look at and pleasurable to use.

Words will never suffice, but along with the rest of the world, we are grateful for everything he accomplished. As a tribute, here are some art pieces inspired by Steve Jobs.

UCreative: The Social Network for Creative Professionals

Our friends at UCreative have something new in store for us! They have upgraded their old Gallery into a more exciting platform. You’ll definitely find some cool stuff on this site and some are listed below.

What is UCreative and what should I expect?

UCreative is a new social network designed for artists and designers. It offers a wide range of tools you can use to interact with fellow designers.

UCreative Forums

First off, the site has a forum where you can freely share your ideas and in return, learn from other creative professionals. This is a great way to learn other designers’ best practices and share your own, or to simply just meet others in the community. You can either join an existing forum thread or create your own discussions. You can even leave a message on other members’ profile pages, just like what you do on Facebook.

UCreative Gallery

UCreative allows upload of your own content and artwork. You can post your own blog articles and inform fellow members of fresh design news. It’s an easy way to share your knowledge with the community. Likewise, you’ll also have the opportunity to read other people’s ideas.

Your artworks, on the other hand, can be uploaded on the site with ease. There are even options to add photos from your Flickr account, or even through your mobile phone. UCreative also features outstanding works on the homepage, which means you get a shot to be featured there, too.

Your Own Profile

You can do a lot of awesome stuff on your profile page. Customize My Page by adding different applications. Poke friends, comment on others’ walls, you can even update your friends by leaving a 140-character status message. Make sure to add the app for chatting with everybody else!
