Wallpaper Freebie for November 2012 – La Calavera Catrina

Freebies, Wallpapers November 1, 2012

The first two days of November is usually celebrated in most parts of the world as a holiday to commemorate and pray for friends and family members who have already passed away. In most countries with Christianity as the main religion, these days are usually celebrated with people going to cemeteries and leaving flowers, candles and prayers to the graves of the deceased.

In Mexico, a similar celebration called Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) features an iconic figure that is mostly associated with Mexican culture and heritage – the La Calavera Catrina. Popularized by Mexican cartoonist and illustrator José Guadalupe Posado during the first part of the 19th century, the Catrina is usually depicted as the skeleton of an upper class woman wearing rich women’s clothes of that age.

Although the La Catrina print was very popular during Posada’s lifetime, it slowly lost its popularity as new media was ushered in from foreign countries. It was later on revived by French artist and art historian Jean Charlot shortly after the Mexican revolution in the 1920’s and has since then become a staple of Mexican-related art. We here at You the Designer recognize the importance and relevance of this artwork in world history so we are giving you guys a version of the La Calavera Catrina created from a graphic artist’s perspective.
